Description:
Large, long-tailed, fairly plain backed typical thrush. Adult male has black supercilium, throat and breast, grey upperparts, and whitish underparts. Female is similar to male, but typically has white or buffish throat and black-streaked malar stripe, and black gorget of spotting across breast.
Distribution:
Common winter visitor and passage migrant all across Gilgit-Baltistan. Found in coniferous forests, grassy scrubby hillsides and in forest edge, willow groves, fields, gardens, orchards, pastures and cultivated ground, from lowlands to 3000m.
Behavior:
Forages on ground and in bushes, notably rhododendrons in winter; reported as taking animal food from unfrozen stream margins. Highly gregarious when not breeding. Feeds on insects, including grasshoppers, beetles and caterpillars, also earthworms, snails. Berries, buds and seeds form staple diet in winter.
